Nickel Allergy & Jewelry: What You Need to Know

Nickel Allergy and Jewelry: What You Need to Know for Itch-Free Skin

Do you suffer from red, itchy skin or irritation right after putting on your favorite earrings? Chances are you’re dealing with a nickel allergy. We’ll explain exactly what a nickel allergy is and — more importantly — which nickel-free jewelry is safe for your sensitive skin.

What is a nickel allergy?

Nickel allergy is the most common form of contact allergy (contact dermatitis) in the Netherlands. Nickel is a hard, silver-white metal often used to make jewelry stronger and shinier. If you are allergic, your immune system sees this metal as an enemy. As soon as your skin comes into contact with nickel, an inflammatory reaction occurs.

Symptoms of a nickel allergy: severe itching and redness around the jewelry (e.g., earlobe, wrist, or neck), skin rash, flakes or small blisters, a burning sensation or swelling (especially with earrings), and in severe cases, weeping eczema. This reaction can occur within 12 to 48 hours. Unfortunately, a nickel allergy is permanent — avoidance is the only solution.

Which jewelry contains nickel?

Nickel is often hidden in cheap fashion jewelry because it is an inexpensive filler. Be careful with base metals (many fashion jewelry items from discount stores), white gold (older white gold was often mixed with nickel; nowadays often palladium), and wearing layers (with silver-plated or gold-plated jewelry, the underlying layer — often nickel-containing brass — becomes exposed when the top layer wears off).

Did you know? According to European REACH legislation, jewelry may only release a minimal amount of nickel. However, many people are so sensitive that they react even to this legally permitted amount.

Is stainless steel safe?

Technically, stainless steel does contain nickel (often 8–12%). But in high-quality 316L surgical steel, this nickel is so firmly trapped in the alloy that it is hardly released. Therefore, surgical steel is safe for 90% of people with a nickel allergy to wear. Do you have an extremely severe allergy? Then choose titanium.

Safe materials for nickel allergy

Titanium — the safest choice. Contains absolutely no nickel, is super light and extremely strong. Used in medical implants. Perfect for people with severe allergies and for new piercings. View our titanium jewelry.

925 sterling silver — an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper (no nickel). A precious metal that is kind to the skin with a beautiful, soft shine. Silver can oxidize but is easy to polish. View our silver earrings.

Bioplast — a flexible plastic. Because it is not metal, it can never cause a nickel reaction. Ideal for pregnancy piercings or oral piercings.

14 carat yellow gold or rose gold — pure gold is naturally hypoallergenic. Note: white gold can sometimes contain nickel, unless specifically stated that it is nickel-free.

5 tips for calm skin

1. Choose consciously — replace cheap fashion jewelry with steel studs or titanium. 2. Keep it dry — sweat and water can release nickel ions more quickly. Remove jewelry during exercise. 3. Nail polish trick — a layer of clear nail polish on the inside of a ring can temporarily help, but it is not a permanent solution. 4. Test first — wear new jewelry at home for an hour first. No itching? Then you can gradually increase wear time. 5. Be careful with piercings — a piercing wound is more sensitive than regular skin. Always use titanium or surgical steel during healing.

Frequently asked questions about nickel allergy

Can a nickel allergy be cured?
No, unfortunately not. Your immune system does not forget this sensitivity. Avoidance is the only remedy.
How do I know for sure if I am allergic to nickel?
Do you have a rash exactly where your watch, jeans button, or earrings are? Then it is almost certainly a nickel allergy. A dermatologist can confirm this with a patch test.
Can I wear earrings with a nickel allergy?
Absolutely. You don't have to go through life without jewelry. Choose 925 silver or titanium — both are safe for sensitive skin.
Is stainless steel safe for nickel allergy?
For most people with a nickel allergy, yes. High-quality 316L surgical steel releases hardly any nickel. If you have a very severe allergy, choose titanium or 925 silver.
Which jewelry is safest for a new piercing?
Always use titanium or 316L surgical steel during healing. A piercing wound is more sensitive than regular skin and reacts more quickly to nickel. View our piercing collection for safe options.
