Difference between starter studs and earrings

Many people wonder about the difference between starter studs and regular earrings. The answer mainly lies in the material and the clasp. In this article, we clearly explain the difference. Check out our starter studs collection.

The material difference

Earrings are available in many different materials: gold, copper, sterling silver, plastic, and more. Starter studs are specifically made from surgical steel (low nickel) or titanium (nickel-free). They are specially designed for people with sensitive skin or a nickel allergy.

Does surgical steel contain nickel?

Yes, surgical steel contains a small amount of nickel (in addition to carbon, iron, and chromium). The amount is so minimal that 98% of people can wear surgical steel without problems. For the small group that does react to nickel, we recommend titanium earrings – completely nickel-free. Read more on our nickel allergy explanation page.

Difference in clasp and tip

Starter studs do not have a sharp point and have a normal butterfly backing that is easy to put on and take off. Piercing studs (from the jeweler) do have a sharp point because they are shot through the earlobe with force. The backings of piercing studs can be tightly secured and are more difficult to remove.

Helix and tragus: always pierce

Other ear jewelry such as a helix or tragus piercing must now always be pierced by a professional. Using a piercing gun can damage or splinter the cartilage (also known as "cauliflower ear").

What is the difference between starter studs and piercing studs?
Starter studs do not have a sharp point and are inserted manually. Piercing studs are shot through the earlobe with a piercing gun and have a sharp point. Starter studs are safer and more comfortable for daily wear.
Are starter studs suitable for children?
Yes, surgical steel starter studs are safe for children. They are low in nickel and have a secure butterfly backing. Check out our children's starter studs collection.
Can I wear starter studs if I have a nickel allergy?
For a mild nickel allergy, surgical steel starter studs can often still be worn. For a severe nickel allergy, we recommend titanium – completely nickel-free. Read more on our nickel allergy explanation page.
How do I properly secure a starter stud?
Slide the butterfly backing firmly onto the post of the starter stud until you feel a click. At Aramat Jewels, you receive extra silicone backings as spares.
