Septum Piercing – What It Is, Jewelry & Care
A septum piercing is a nose piercing placed through the soft tissue just below the nasal septum — the so-called "sweet spot." The piercing therefore does not go through the cartilage, which makes it less painful than often thought. A unique advantage: the septum piercing can be discreetly flipped up, making it easy to conceal. Healing time: 6 to 8 weeks. Recommended materials: titanium or surgical steel.
Placement of the Septum Piercing
The piercer locates the "sweet spot" — the thin piece of skin between the nostrils, just below the nasal septum. This soft tissue contains few nerves, making the pain tolerable. The procedure only takes a few minutes. Always choose an experienced piercer who can correctly locate the sweet spot — an incorrectly placed septum piercing *does* go through cartilage and is much more painful. LSI terms: septum piercing sweet spot, nasal septum piercing, septum needle, septum placement, septum cartilage.
Jewelry for Septum Piercings
Horseshoe barbell — a semi-circular bar with a ball at each end. The most classic choice for a septum. Can be flipped up into the nose to hide the piercing. See also: barbell piercing explanation.
Septum clicker — a ring with a convenient click mechanism. Easy to open and close — ideal for daily wear. Available from simple to adorned with stones or patterns.
Captive bead ring — a closed ring with a bead held in place by tension. See also: captive bead ring explanation.
Retainer — an inconspicuous, transparent or flesh-colored piece of jewelry that hides the piercing. Ideal for work or occasions where the piercing should not be visible.
Materials for Septum Piercings
Titanium — 100% nickel-free, lightweight, and the safest choice for new piercings and sensitive skin.
Surgical steel (316L) — strong and durable. Low nickel but theoretically contains traces of nickel — less suitable for nickel allergy.
14 karat gold — luxurious appearance. Choose at least 14 karat for safe use in piercings.
Healing and Care
The healing time for a septum piercing is 6 to 8 weeks, but full healing can take longer. During healing, these tips are essential:
Cleaning — clean twice a day with sterile saline solution (NaCl 0.9%). Do not use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.
Touching — avoid touching the piercing as much as possible. Always use clean hands if cleaning is necessary.
Movement — do not twist or move the piercing during healing. This irritates the wound and slows healing.
Changing jewelry — wait until the piercing is fully healed before replacing the jewelry. Changing too early increases the risk of infection.
Hiding a Septum Piercing
One of the biggest advantages of the septum piercing is that it is easy to hide. Flip the horseshoe barbell or clicker up into the nose — the piercing will then be barely visible from the outside. For maximum discretion, use a retainer: a transparent or flesh-colored piece of jewelry that completely conceals the piercing.
Frequently Asked Questions about Septum Piercings
- Does a septum piercing hurt?
- Less than expected. The piercing goes through the soft tissue (sweet spot), not the cartilage. Most people only experience a short, sharp sensation. Eyes often tear up briefly — that's a normal reflex.
- How long does it take for a septum piercing to heal?
- On average 6 to 8 weeks. Full healing can take 3 to 6 months. Continue to care for the piercing even if it already looks healed.
- Can I hide my septum piercing?
- Yes — flip the horseshoe barbell or clicker up into the nose. For maximum discretion, use a retainer.
- What material is best for a septum piercing?
- Titanium is the safest choice — 100% nickel-free and lightweight. Surgical steel is also suitable for most people.
- Can I wear a septum piercing if I have a nickel allergy?
- In that case, choose titanium. Avoid surgical steel if you have a true nickel allergy. Read more on our nickel allergy page.
