What Is Crystal? Properties, Types, and Use in Jewelry

What is crystal?

Crystal is a special type of glass that contains lead oxide, which provides a higher refractive index and thus greater clarity and brilliance than ordinary glass. Light is refracted and reflected in crystal in a way that creates a sparkling, prismatic effect. Crystal is widely used in jewelry due to its brilliant appearance and affordable price compared to gemstones. View our crystal jewelry collection for earrings, pendants, and more.

How is crystal made?

Crystal is made by melting a mixture of silica sand, potash, and lead oxide together in a furnace at high temperatures. This results in a liquid mass that is poured or blown into molds. After cooling, the crystal is cut and polished to maximize its brilliance. The amount of lead oxide determines the quality: the more lead, the greater the refractive index and brilliance. Traditional crystal contains 24% or more lead oxide. Modern variants sometimes use barium or zinc as an alternative to lead.

Types of crystal in jewelry

Lead crystal — the classic crystal with lead oxide for maximum brilliance. Known from brands such as Swarovski. Lead-free crystal — modern variant with barium or zinc instead of lead. More environmentally friendly and safe for everyday use. Rock crystal — a natural quartz variety, transparent and clear. Used in high-quality jewelry. Colored crystals — by adding metal oxides during production, crystals are available in virtually every color. Combine with matching purple jewelry for a colorful, crystal look.

Difference between crystal, cubic zirconia, and diamond

Crystal — glass with lead oxide. Affordable, brilliant, available in all colors. Softer than cubic zirconia and diamond (Mohs 5–6). Cubic zirconia — synthetic zirconium dioxide. Harder (Mohs 8–8.5), optically flawless, and colorless. Closer to diamond in appearance. Diamond — the hardest natural material (Mohs 10). Unique due to its natural origin and rarity. Much more expensive than crystal or cubic zirconia. Read more on our cubic zirconia encyclopedia page.

Frequently asked questions about crystal

What is the difference between crystal and ordinary glass?
Crystal contains lead oxide (or modern alternatives like barium), which provides a higher refractive index and thus more brilliance than ordinary glass. Crystal is also heavier and has a clearer sound when tapped.
Is crystal the same as Swarovski?
Swarovski is a brand that produces high-quality lead crystal. "Crystal" is the generic term for the material; Swarovski is a specific brand known for its precision-cut, high-quality crystals.
Is crystal suitable for everyday use in jewelry?
Crystal scores 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale and is softer than cubic zirconia or diamond. It is suitable for earrings and pendants that experience less wear. In rings, extra caution is needed to prevent scratches.
How do I care for crystal jewelry?
Clean gently with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals. Store separately in a soft pouch to prevent scratches. Avoid contact with perfume and hairspray.
What is the difference between crystal and gemstones?
Gemstones are natural minerals formed in the earth — such as amethyst, topaz, or ruby. Crystal is a man-made glass. Gemstones are rarer and more valuable; crystal is more affordable and available in more colors and shapes.
